Review of Highland Village, Texas

Great citizens and amenities - Terrible city gover
Star Rating - 6/24/2014
My family has lived in Highland Village for seven years. Before this, we lived in Flower Mound for seven years. We love our neighbors, the shopping, and the overall culture of this small, close, clean town.

On the other hand, the city government is abusive and aggressive. The police visit your home within the first week or so of moving in "just to get to know you". Seems so nice and quaint. They leave their card and offer to help in any way they can. The police chief will tell you (if you meet him in person) that they even waive your first traffic ticket once the officers check and see that you have no preexisting moving violations. How wonderful you think.... so did we.

Last week the water department drafted $788 out of our banking account for the water bill. Turns out they made a mistake... you think??? Now they want to keep my money as a credit. They say they cannot return it to my bank account. Wait! This can't be true, but it is.

After several phone calls to the city manager, they have offered to cut me a check four days from now and then mail it to me. Wow...they can take an extra $700 from me and keep it until they get ready to return it? Doesn't seem right...

My only traffic ticket was for driving 50 mph on a four lane divided road with a median (FM 2499). On one side of the road, it has a speed limit of 45 while the opposing lanes have a speed limit of 40. It is confusing and conflicting. No matter.... I had NO preexisting traffic tickets and I explained this to the officer. He told me that he knew nothing about this policy. Needless to say I received a ticket (which of course I paid).

The town is wonderful. The local government is like dealing with the mob or worse. They have their own ideas about citizens and they have been known to stop your vehicle, search, and question a citizen over and over, day after day, even when the citizen has broken no traffic laws and done nothing wrong. They rule and reign based on stereotypes and preconceived notions. We are thinking of moving back to Flower Mound just to get away from this craziness...anybody looking for a five bedroom, five bathroom home with a library, office, video room, game room, covered outdoor patio and kitchen, built on a one acre lot up on a hill with a beautiful view?
